Sense of Being, Over Doing

Former AVP Chiropractor Frank Amato discusses with BBV Founder Wendy Jones her notion of "Being, over Doing" and how even his business and chiropractic practice are forms of his own self-expression.

Dr. Frank Amato and I zeroed in on one of my favorite concepts that helps me connect to my higher self. In this conversation we discussed what it means to value ‘being’ over ‘doing’. This happens when we are present in our minds and bodies and experience each moment of life, rather than living by a checklist of things we know and must get done. Whether on the court, in school, or in life, while we are learning something new, we have to repeat the pattern many times to integrate it into our motor patterns and psyche. In time, what we learn to do becomes part of us, whether those are good habits or bad, and our sense of self awareness informs us if this is a pattern that is helping us to be more of who we want to be. Frank reminded me that if we can soften our ego to be vulnerable enough to learn from others, whether another player, a coach, or parent, we will always evolve through sport and life. As fascinated as Frank is by human movement, it is no wonder the quality of care that he provides his patients is of the highest quality. When an athlete is struggling with a physical ailment, Frank understands how to treat not only their body, but also their mind and spirit so they have the best chance of making a full recovery. He is a great example of someone who embodies being over doing. Frank Amato is a licensed Chiropractic Orthopedist. His practice, The Center, is located in Hermosa Beach where he has helped countless volleyball athletes return to play in a safe way and always with regard for their mind, body & spirit.
